Buenas, Bawoni, Bon Jour, Anitele, Ambolo!
When I was in the tenth grade, I learned that my middle name Delicia was also the Spanish word for delight, a discovery that, in my mind, both predestined and justified my commitment to being obsessed with the Spanish language for the rest of my life. See, I was the kid in elementary school annoying my classmates by asking them to “pass the sal,” while at the same time proclaiming my love for alitas de pollo frito. I had no idea that years later, my love of the Spanish language would propel me on a journey that would take me around the world and transform my views of business, myself, and life in general.
After graduating from Howard University, naturally with a degree in International Business, I accepted a consultancy position in Quibdó, Colombia, the capital city of one of the country’s most underserved and predominately African-descended regions. For the first time in my life, I got to see how political, economic, and social environments different than my own, influenced business, creativity, and quality of life for others. Throughout my career, I would go on to live and work in the Dominican Republic, South Africa, Mozambique, India, Equatorial Guinea, the only Spanish-speaking country in Africa, and manage projects in Ghana—with the goal of transforming my own ideals of how business should be done and life, lived.
It’d be an understatement to say that these experiences changed me: but while I was inspired to learn as much as I could about the world, I found that being the one constant across several different and contrasting environments, led me through a painful process of introspection, and I discovered both good and bad things, not just the world, but, about myself.
This blog is an opportunity to share a share a little bit (o tal vez mucho) of my own perspective; I hope to explore ideas around finance, economics, entrepreneurship, culture, personal growth, and emerging markets. And I hope to do so with an increased awareness of my own bias, flaws and limitations.
My goal in writing this blog is to explore some of my own curiosities and to, perhaps, get others to see things in a different way. Please enjoy and feel free to contact me.
